Our Big Dream

So we're moving from sunny southern California to Nebraska at the end of February. That's right, Nebraska. What's in Nebraska, you may ask? Wheat. Lots of wheat. My husband's family farm is also there and that's where we are going. Our business has all but dried up here and so we're taking refuge in a place where we'll never be kicked out. Now there's a plus!
We have been feasting on books written on organic farming, sustainable living, raising animals, investing, and business building. So that's our dream.

This Dream Du Jour set from Stampin Up is so beautiful. And I love the punched medallion done with a Fiskars border punch and a 2 3/4 inch square. Just punch all 4 sides of the square being careful to perfectly center each side before punching. The scalloped edge was done with a Stampin Up border punch. The ink I used for the border "ribbon" was Distress Ink, Walnut Stain. I was also able to incorperate one of the Embrace Life stamps as well (the little flower on the "ribbon")

Digital Scrapbooking

So, as you may have noticed, my new blog heading is a digital scrapbook page. I have not ever done any digital scrapbooking, but I have had these Tim Holtz cd's for about a year now, and finally decided to do something with them. (I "paid" for it though, as Jackson completely destroyed any area of "neatness" in the house while I sat at the computer. His favorite thing to do is unload every "allowed" cupboard in the house. )
I love the distressed look and pretty much everything Tim Holtz does. Although I love his style, I'm finally coming to terms with the fact that it's not MY style, even though in the past I've tried to make it my style. You should check out his blog if you haven't yet. His Christmas tags are quite fun.
I still don't have any idea what my style is...perhaps I should call it eclectic.
Anyway, the attempt was fun and taught me that I have TONS to learn. I don't know if I'll keep at it until I'm more proficient or not, I prefer the more tactile crafting. In creating my new heading my fingers didn't even get sticky!

Refried Beans

My brother discussed with me how to make refried beans last weekend at a family get together and yesterday I tried it! We are having to conserve, conserve, conserve, so we're eating cheap and beans are cheap.
They were easy to make and yummy, too. I also attempted some Mexican rice as well. I think I sauted the rice too long, so I'll have to work on that recipe. But here's the recipe I used to make the refried beans.

Ingredients:
2 lbs pinto beans
3 slices bacon
1 large sweet onion (Know what makes an onion sweet? Look for the ones that are "flat-ish")
water
salt

Directions:
Soak the beans overnight in lots of water. The next morning drain the beans and put them in a LARGE crock pot with the bacon and chopped onion. Cover everything with enough water to be about 2 inches above your beans. Turn the crock pot on high and go do your housework, or go to work, or read a book, or take a walk...you get the picture. 8 hours didn't seem to be enough, so when my crockpot ran that first cycle, I turned it on again. (Mine turns off after 8 hours) You want the beans to be SUPER soft.
When they are super soft, get out a large skillet and add 2-3 Tbs of some kind of fat. I used Crisco, my brother used bacon grease and butter. I WANTED to use lard to be really authentic, but my grocery store didn't have it and I didn't want to run all over town looking for lard.
Melt the grease and add about 1/2 the beans, mash and salt to taste. They dry up quickly, so use some of the juice from the pot to soften to the consistency you like.

We'll be eating refried beans with EVERYTHING for a few days....

Proverbs 11:25
A generous man will prosper; he who refreshes others will himself be refreshed.

Latest Scrapbooking Page

I love these photos of Jackson from last May. He is so expressive and adorable. These PJ's are some that I had saved from Schuyler, his 16 year old brother. The paper is Basic Grey and were some scraps that I wanted to use, so I made the paper pieced background before I chose the photos. The letter stickers are American Crafts. They were originally white; I painted them with acrylic paint and used the same paint to distress the edges of the background cardstock. I don't know the brand name of the tag stickers but I think they are adorable on this layout. The lamb and tags were made with Quickutz
